Meningitis and Septicaemia (blood poisoning) are rare but life-threatening diseases. They can be caused by several groups of meningococcal bacteria - the most common types are A, B, C, W and Y; the Meningococcal Vaccination (Menactra) provides protection against meningococcal A,C,W,Y strains. Since 2009, there has been a year-on-year increase in the number of cases of meningococcal W (MenW) infection in the UK. The risk of getting the disease is greatest during the late teen years.
Young people and adults are recommended to have the Meningococcal vaccination (Menactra) if they are often in situations of close contact with many people. For example, Dr. Donna highlights that Orientation/Welcome Week at schools and universities present a particularly greater risk as people from many different places around the world come together (increasing the risk of exposure and infection). If you are heading to university/ college this year, it is recommended that you receive the Meningococcal vaccination. Only dose is required for protection for up to 5 years. It is important that you are immunized 2 weeks before you relocate to ensure that your immunity has fully built up.
MedConsult Clinic offers the Menactra vaccination for only 2,554.00 THB in total.
The Meningococcal ACWY vaccine (Menactra) is given by a single injection and protects against four different strains of the meningococcal bacteria that cause meningitis and blood poisoning (septicaemia): A, C, W and Y.
In the UK, the Meningococcal ACWY Vaccination (Menactra) is now part of the NHS school vaccination program and is provided as two doses. One dose is given between the ages of 11-12 years old and a second booster dose is given at 16 years of age.
