How much weight can I lose in a month?
The short answer
Most adults lose 2–4 kg (4–8 lb) in a month, or about 0.5–1 kg (1–2 lb) a week. A better guide than a fixed figure is 0.5–1% of body weight per week. Someone starting at 110 kg loses more in absolute terms than someone starting at 60 kg, at the same rate of progress.
Typical month

Suggested first steps
- Work out your own range — 0.5–1% of body weight a week
- Weigh once a week, same time, same conditions
- Measure your waist as well as your weight
- Have your thyroid and blood sugar checked
Run it against your own starting weight
The realistic range for your starting weight
Most first months read higher than the figures below. The extra is water.
| Your weight now | ~0.5% per week | ~1% per week | Realistic month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 kg | 0.3 kg | 0.6 kg | 1.2 – 2.4 kg |
| 75 kg | 0.4 kg | 0.75 kg | 1.5 – 3.0 kg |
| 90 kg | 0.45 kg | 0.9 kg | 1.8 – 3.6 kg |
| 110 kg | 0.55 kg | 1.1 kg | 2.2 – 4.4 kg |
If you are not sure which range applies, start with your BMI. There is a BMI calculator and the full category chart on our weight loss page, and a fuller explanation of how BMI relates to health risk if your figure is above 30.
Why the first month reads high
The body holds 400–500 g of glycogen in the muscles and liver, and each gram binds around 3 g of water. When intake falls, that store empties within a few days and the water leaves with it. That accounts for 1.5–2 kg on the scale before any meaningful fat loss.
Three other things move early: less food in the digestive tract, lower salt intake once you eat out less often, and ordinary fluid variation. A 3 kg fall in the first week is common, and around 0.5 kg of it is fat.
By the third week the scale usually stops. This is expected. Fat stores roughly five times more energy per kilogram than the glycogen and water that left first, so the same daily deficit now produces a much smaller change in weight.
This is the point where most people give up. Knowing the pattern in advance is the main protection against it.
What changes your rate of loss
- Starting weight. At the same percentage, a higher starting weight means a larger loss each week.
- Muscle mass. More muscle raises daily energy use, and protecting it during a deficit is what stops progress stalling.
- Age and hormones. Muscle loss and hormonal change alter the picture from the 40s onward. See women's health and men's health for how this differs.
- Sleep and stress. Short sleep raises appetite hormones and makes evening eating harder to resist. Where stress eating is the main pattern, our mental health service covers it.
- Thyroid and blood sugar. Both are checkable, and worth checking before willpower is blamed. A health check-up establishes the baseline.
- Living in Bangkok. Eating out most days, high-sodium food, hot-season fluid shifts, and a commute that removes walking from the day.

Can I lose 10 kg in a month?
For almost everyone the answer is no.
A 10 kg loss in 30 days requires a daily deficit most adults cannot reach without eating too little to be safe. Those who come close usually start from a very high weight, and a large share of the first few kilograms is still water. The cost is muscle loss, a raised risk of gallstones, and the rebound that follows most crash diets.
If a fixed figure by a fixed date has become the goal, say so at the consultation. A four-week deadline is usually workable once the target is rebuilt around what four weeks can deliver.
Why 5–10% is the figure that matters
A loss of 5–10% of body weight is the point at which blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol improve measurably. At 90 kg that is 4.5 kg, which is six to ten weeks of steady progress.
It is also the more workable goal. "Lose 20 kg" shows no visible progress for months. "Lose 4.5 kg and repeat the bloods" is finished this quarter.
Track more than the scale
Weigh once a week, at the same time and under the same conditions, and read the trend across the month. A single reading tells you very little. Four other measures matter more than the weekly number.
Weekly
Waist circumference
Often moves when the scale does not. Measure at the navel, same time of day.
Daily
How your clothes fit
The plainest signal available, and the only one that costs nothing to check.
Every three months
Bloods and blood pressure
Fasting blood sugar, HbA1c and lipids — the reason for doing any of this.
As you go
Energy, sleep and joints
These usually shift weeks before the scale registers anything.
What a first month at MedConsult involves
You start with figures
Bloods, thyroid and blood sugar, blood pressure and body composition. The plan is built on your own numbers.
Then it stays simple
A target set to your body and your schedule, with check-ins close enough together that adjustments happen in week two.
Where appropriate, prescription options are set out openly alongside everything else. Both clinics are English-speaking, and you can talk it through in a consultation first before committing to anything.

Frequently asked questions
How much weight can I lose in a month without exercise?
Diet accounts for most of the loss, so the range is similar — about 0.5–1% of body weight per week. What differs is the composition. Without resistance training a larger share of the loss is muscle, which lowers daily energy use and makes the following month harder.
I lost 3 kg in week one and nothing in week three. What went wrong?
Nothing, in all likelihood. Week one was largely glycogen and water. Week three is fat, which registers far more slowly on the scale. Judge progress over four weeks.
Is 5 kg in a month too fast?
It depends on the starting point. At 110 kg it sits at the upper end of a reasonable range. At 60 kg it is fast enough that muscle is likely being lost. This is why percentage of body weight is the better guide.
How much weight can I lose in a month with prescription support?
Less than is commonly claimed online, particularly early on. Doses start low and increase gradually, so the first month is usually modest and the meaningful change accumulates over months. What is appropriate depends on your health history, and that is established at the consultation.
Does my age change how much I can lose?
Age changes the work involved, and the outcome stays reachable. Muscle mass declines with age, and hormonal shifts affect appetite, sleep and where fat is stored. Resistance training and adequate protein offset most of it.
Why is my weight higher some mornings when I have been consistent?
Daily variation of 1–2 kg comes from food volume, salt, hydration, hormonal cycle and recent exercise. None of it is fat gained overnight. Use a weekly average.
How do I know whether my target is realistic before I start?
Take your current weight, multiply by 0.005 and by 0.01, then multiply each result by four. That gives your realistic monthly window. If the goal sits well above that window, adjust the goal.
